Retiring Football Coach Gary Blevins and team doctor, Dr David Bazzo, were recently recognized by the San Diego High School Sports Association for their commitment and dedication to high school athletics in San Diego. Coach Blevins led the football team from 1995-2017. During that time he compiled a record of 145-117-4 which ranks 19th all-time of all coaches in San Diego. Eight Marauders who played for Coach Blevins played or are playing in the NFL. They include Ray Rowe, Mike Pittman, JR Tolver, Teyo Johnson, Amon Gordon, Nate Chandler, Kevin Ozier and Damien Williams. Dozens more went onto play college football.
Dr. David Bazzo has worked with the football team since 2012. During his time he implemented baseline testing for concussions to all the football players to help confirm when a player has sustained a concussion. This eventually spilled over to all the teams at Mira Mesa. Dr. Bazzo and his staff come to the Mira Mesa yearly to give physicals and he was instrumental in developing the relationship between UCSD Medical and the San Diego Unified School District to provide Athletic Trainers at all the school sites.
